FW: [canberrabirds] Red-capped Robin, Currawong call

Not directly related to koels, but the currawongs around here are very noticeable at the moment  with their ‘what no beer’ territorial call  -  mainly at very first light and late afternoon.  I described this in a CBN last year.

When this topic (ie unexpected koel calls)  was previously raised on the chatline (http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au/archives/html/canberrabirds/2008-03/msg00178.html) and (http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au/archives/html/canberrabirds/2007-01/msg00135.html) the answer was pied currawong calls. 

We had one Eastern Koel in Carwoola (near Christmas 2007): it didn't hang around long  - to the pleasure of tour neighbours whose property it was both seen and heard in.  Also the location is not, as the cuckoo flies, very far from Southern Canberra and about level with N Kambah.  As far as I am aware this is the only extra-urban record (see Canberra Bird Notes March 2009 p 33).

It was in the vallley down near fishing gap (I have a habit of bush bashing), so I am not sure how keen I am for a return visit.

The Red-capped Robins are a good find. They seem to be getting fairly common in the Mulligans-Goorooyarro reserves lately with over 3-4 birds able to be seen some years spread out across the reserve.

 

I’m not sure about your Koel’s though. As far as I know they have not arrived yet as they are summer migrants to southern Australia. The first birds don’t tend to arrive around Sydney and the Blue Mts until late September at the earliest and we don’t tend to get them until October, and then as far as I know they only hang around the inner Canberra leafy suburbs.

 

Not sure what else you could have heard.

Howdy

 

I found a female and a juvenile Red-capped robin at Mulligan's Flat yesterday. Right next to the Dunnart gate.
