Socks had a mate  named Bert Council who also lived in a shack on the slopes of Mt Ainslie. Not sure if they shared the shack or had separate digs. They were about the same vintage. Bert sharpened knives for a living and I can remember seeing him riding his bike aound Ainslie and Reid in the 50's looking for business fom local housholds. He met an untimely death when he was killed by a chook.(Note the ornithological link). He won a frozen bird in a raffle at the Hotel Ainslie (now Olims). He took it home to the shack and went to sleep with it wrapped in his arms against his chest. The chook thawed out but poor Bert caught a chill and died of pneumonia sometime later.

Perhaps Bert should get a signpost on the mountain. Nice to see local personalities being commemorated in this way.
