Hello subscribers,
Perhaps because I've been focussing on obtaining
speakers for the longer presentations (there is now a list of very interesting
presenters and topics for the remainder of 2009), I find myself in a situation
where I'm do not have sufficient speakers for the shorter (20 minute)
presentations. I do have a short list of potential speaker and topics, but
at this stage I have no-one actually committed to give a short presentation at
any of our meetings, including on 11 March.
So here's how you can help. If you are aware
of any short presentation (and a speaker) which would be of interest to COG
members please let me know and I can follow it up. Better still why not
volunteer to do one yourself? I'm thinking in particular of "bird of the
month" presentations, which due to a lack of offers only "yours truly" has given
over the past couple of years. These need not take a lot of preparation,
just a few images (easily obtained with permission from the PhotoGallery on the
COG web site) plus a few points of identification or other interesting features
or things to do with the species' habits or habitats is needed.
Remember that the best and most appreciated presentations are those that make a
few good points well, particularly with a bit of humour and
enthusiasm.
So I look forward to hearing from you. Some
of you might be aware that my first active involvement in COG meetings and
affairs was a bird of the month talk on Red-breasted Robins given over 25 years
ago. And this was in a time when all you had were overheads (handwritten I
recall) and slides I had to borrow from BOCA in Victoria. And I'd never
even seen two of the five species at the time! You don't need to be
that ambitious, just pick one or two of your favourite birds, and I promise to
be very flexible with your choices.
