1900 Hours Monday evening, conditions overcast, I was riding in a cab over
The Scrivener Dam when I caught a fleeting glimpse of a flock of birds, ~ 50 at
least, as they rose over the dam and dropped down towards the surface of Lake
Burley G. I believe they'd been travelling upstream along the Molonglo. First
impression was they were small waders. But as my total knowledge of waders could
be written in #10 type upper case on one side of a Little Stint, I won't explore
that possibility too far. Empiricism leads me to discount Common Starlings and
Silver Gulls. Latter are too large to have filled the bill (Ha)
anyhow. Nonetheless, these birds seemed to possess a silvery hue which
causes me to hazard Rainbow Bee-eaters on migration. Wild conjecture, I suppose,
but recall reading that airborne bee-eaters may appear silvery. So,
not much if anything to go by. Any suggestions?
John Layton.
