Hi All
A work colleague wanted me to try to id some of the birds he hears near his house that backs on to Mount Rogers reserve so I headed up there at first light this morning to firstly check out the recent Painted Button-quail sightings by John Leonard and Pete Milburn. After a bit of searching I soon found an area within 150m of the carpark that was littered with dozens probably hundreds of button-quail platelets. Another a few minutes searching this area and I had brief views of two Painted Button-quail as they froze for a second before flushing. They only flew thirty yards but I didn't want to flush them again so left them to it. Also an adult and immature Red-capped Robin further up the hill.
As I haven't done any birding in this corner of Canberra since I moved here, I thought I would check out the nearby Gooromon ponds in Dunlop. They are obviously quite sub-urban with lots of housing going up around but still pretty good birding, best of which were two Baillons Crakes (although I think I got a bit lucky with both views as there is no exposed mud or obvious spots to see crakes in the open), several Little Grassbird, and a typically energetic Hobby.
I also checked out the Ginninderra Creek area in West MacGregor for the first time and was impressed by the number of Dusky Woodswallows and Horsfields Bronze-cuckoos but the best bird here was a fine adult male Brown Songlark in full song from the power lines just beyond the old sewerage works (or what I am guessing is referred to as the old sewerage works).
Cheers Dan
