Interesting comparing this
with the dates for the Frogmouths up at the Pinnacle. I first spotted
the 2 adults, one already sitting on a nest on Sept 21. The first
confirmed sighting of the chick (there was only one) was Oct 27.
Presumably it was there but hidden for several days prior to that.
Barbara Allan photographed the roughly half-grown chick standing beside
the parent on Nov. 9 (shown briefly at the COG meeting). The last
sighting, still in the nesting tree but some distance from the nest,
was Nov. 12. Since then, there has been no sign of any of the 3 birds,
though they may well still be in the neighbourhood as there are
innumerable suitable roosts.
So that's a total of 52 days from first sighting to last, or say 28
days for incubation plus 24 days "in captivity". Allowing for the
distinct possibility that the nest went undiscovered for a few days in
September, this probably puts the fledging figure into the HANZAB range mentioned by Martin.
However, I am curious as to how mobile the young birds are while still
some way from being full-grown. Are they capable of flying any sort of
distance while still not much bigger than the size Barbara photographed?

The Ainslie (Corroboree) Frogmouths were present on 9 November, but
had gone by the 10th (and I haven't seen any of the family since). If
Lindell's obs on 18/10 in fact caught the first hatching, thats only 22
days. But the first hatching may well have have been a few
days earlier as I first saw one
adult apparently on the nest on 10 September and incubation is said to
be 28-32
days. Michael Lenz noted to me that the chicks looked well developed in
the few days before the 9th.
Last year according to my semi-regular observations, the two fledglings
remained with the parents in and around the park much longer until at
least 2 December. (with one of the new fledglings spending a precarious
morning percehd on a green recycling bin fallen over beside the road).
Then they all disappeared until 2 adults resumed regular appearance in
early March 2008.

I have just returned from my 'weekly' visit to Corrobee Park

gone.
I was concerned that they may have been harassed into

as I noted a football stuck high up in a nearby tree. What is the usual
time from hatching to fledgling? - the little 'fluff-ball' I had
photographed on my first visit there was taken on 18/10/08. and the
last photo taken on 8/11/08 showed them nowhere near as mature as the
one in the old Chough's nest at Campbell Park. Any ideas?
