Prue and I had a look between 5 & 6 this afternoon - no Black-eared. We saw a
similar range of birds to Marnix with the addition of 2 Diamond Firetails, no
White-necked Heron though. Interestingly our only cuckoo was an uncooperative
Brush Cuckoo calling from a dense stand of trees on adjacent private land,
couldn't catch a glimpse of it no matter how hard we tried. Anyone prepared to
spend the day there might record nearly all the cuckoos on the ACT list!
cheers
Steve

[canberrabirds] Black-eared
Cuckoo
Seen on the woodland walk behind the Namadgi Visitors Information Centre
this morning. A most obliging bird, posed, called, moved from tree to tree
in the sunlight, showed off its diagnostic undertail coverts, probed in a
tree trunk and ate a caterpillar-like object it found. A great
photo-opportunity but I was, alas, without a camera. For anyone passing
the VIC at the weekend, it might be worth stopping briefly to check if it
is still there – and if so to record it for the blitz. Lots of other action
as usual in that spot which would be a really good site for a beginner to
check out for the blitz. b
