DYNAMIC BIRD MIGRATION IN RESPONSE TO AUSTRALIA'S VARIABLE CLIMATE
Saunders, D.L., Wood, J. Cunningham, R.,
Heinsohn, R. (presented by Debbie Saunders)

Abstract:

The spatial and temporal dynamics of terrestrial
bird migration in Australia are poorly
understood. However, in this presentation we
demonstrate the dynamic nature of movement
patterns and habitat use by the Swift Parrot
(Lathamus discolor) in response to Australia's
variable climate. The Swift Parrot is an
endangered species that is dependant on forests
and woodlands in south-eastern Australia. The
whole population migrates north from the breeding
grounds in Tasmania each year and disperses
across south-eastern mainland Australia for the
winter. The small population size (2500 birds),
broad winter distribution (>1,250,000 km2) and
often cryptic nature make this species
particularly challenging to study. However,
using seven years of volunteer survey data, this
study provides the first demonstration of
large-scale drought related movements by a
migratory population throughout their winter
range. Importantly it also emphasises that
conservation measures need to be implemented
throughout the species range, including drought refuge woodlands and forests.
