1. At 13:55hrs today two pair of superb parrots were in trees at corner of
College Street & Lathlain Street Belconnen (diagonally opposite big Shell,
servo not far from Belco Markets). Flew off towards north-west.
2. Magpie nesting is well underway in the Emu Ridge (Belconnen) area.
Males can be seen offering their mates food any time after the Winter
Solstice. Females build nests from late July through mid-August and lay
eggs towards the end of August (around 22nd). Nests are usually built in
different trees each year. The ever hungry young hatch in Sept (around
9th) and are now constantly being ferried food by hard working parents.
Have noticed parents carrying plenty of small cockroaches, small
caterpillars, spiders and millipedes. Although the young from the previous
year are normally chased away in July or August, this year some of the
year-old birds remained skulking around the border of the adult territories
until mid-September.
