I noticed recently that the importance of submitting observation records was recognised in the ACT State of the Environment Report 2007-08, in respect of conserving biodiversity.  COG were specifically mentioned as the example of the sort of community group that the ACT government should work with to ensure data that is collected is made available for use in planning and managing the Territory's natural resources.

As one who regularly submits records, it is heartening to know that not only is this contributing to our knowledge of the birds of this region but also strengthening any case for the conservation of habitat.  I can't think of a better reason to do it - and it's also fun!
