Hi all,

I was out at Stromlo FP today to see whether the group of 24 White-fronted
Chats I reported in an email on 14 March of this year were still around. It
turns out this site is a haven for this species now.

Initially I found a single male calling from a fence post. Then my eye
caught a weaving flock some 200 metres away. Sure enough they were
White-fronted Chats. The next half hour I followed them closely at one
point having stood still for ages the flock foraged quietly around me
within metres.
A quick count put the flock size at around 24-26. I then counted just the
males and came up with 16. The paler birds (females/immatures) added up to
10 including a single scruffy juvenile bird. This made for a total of 26.

The flock seemed pretty nervous with the whole group often flying up and
weaving about for a few seconds before re-alighting. When I left them to
walk back to the car park I came across another group of 4 birds - 2 males,
2 females. They weren't from the original group I was watching as they had
flown further away and this group was some 300 metres distant.

All up I counted 30 definite birds. There are probably many more spread out
across the whole park.

Other birds seen today:

3 Flame Robins including a male
1 Australian Kestrel
1 Brown Falcon
and many Pipits & displaying Skylarks

Cheers
