Would our expert members be able to offer some advice?
Here in Dunlop there are a number of ponds that support resident and
breeding populations of waterbirds. Inevitably the local human
population likes to take its children (and itself) down to "feed the
ducks". The local group of environment volunteers welcomes this
interest in local wildlife, which is much preferred to the
alternative activities of throwing stones at the birds, swimming dogs
and even horses, or littering the ponds with rubbish. However, we
are concerned that the food offered should not be harmful and have
been concerned in the past at finding offerings of large amounts of
white bread apparently left as gifts for the birds. In cooperation
with appropriate ACT Government departments we intend to erect some
signs suggesting appropriate foods to give, if necessary adding
advice about seasons and teams.
Does anyone in the group have experience of preparing such notices or
suggestions about what information they might usefully contain? Your
help would be very welcome. If you prefer to discuss the subject, I
can usually be contacted on 6258 1137 during working hours.
Thanks for your time
Joe Barr
