I noted two interesting paterns of flight on my travels today:
1. Driving along Parkes Way north of Commonwealth Park I saw three
Choughs very high up (for Choughs), say 100 ft. they had flapped up to
a high point above the road and were gliding down, almost parachuting.
They were crossing from Commonwealth Park into Civic. I guess they do
this to avoid dangerous traffic. I wonder if they do this naturally
(crossing rivers &c), or whether it's an urban adaptation.
2. 100s of Starlings at the Sewage Ponds pretending to be Dusky
Woodswallows (gliding about over the ponds). I have seen small numbers
of Starlings doing this before, but to see such numbers doing it all
at once is staggering.
The Ponds have small numbers of almost everything (even a solitary
Musk Duck juvenile). Only missing ducks were Pink-eared and Freckled.
