Well, the ongoing operation of the Mack's Reef Road Tip seems to explain part of this apparent puzzle.

I was pleased that Marnix commented on the Ibis using Mistletoes as a nesting site, as I had the vague impression that might be the case, but without binoculars with me, at the time, I could not confirm that.
 
It makes sense, as the "stump" of the mistletoe is quite broad, and these birds are not tidy nest builders. They seem to like a platform on which to build. That impression was confirmed by photos seen recently of Ibis using Palm Trees as nesting sites (in suburban Sydney).
