You can set your e-mail client so that it doesn't automatically download messages over a certain size - you'll just get the header and can decide whether to download the full message or delete it on the server without downloading it. My mail client is set to do that for anything over 50kb. But I agree that better etiquette would be to put the images on the web and send a link to them.
