I was out at West Macgregor again at 6.30am today and there are definitely at
least 3 Red-backed Kingfishers. There was a male on an overhead wire near to
me calling, and I could see the female in a dead willow over to my left, and
there was a third bird calling in response from the far side of the creek. It
sounded some way up the hill. Over a period of about 2 hours, the birds were
calling on and off, but I couldn't locate the third bird, although there is no
doubt it was there. At one point, 2 kingfisher-like birds flew out of a tree
at the top of the hill and quickly disappeared - the distance was too great to
be certain they were RBKs. If there had been any obvious way of crossing the
creek, I would have trespassed and investigated!

Other species not noted yesterday were 1 Little Eagle, 1 Diamond Firetail and 2
Rufous Songlarks. The Pallid Cuckoos in the area are very confiding, allowing
approach to within a few metres.

I'm yet to see the reported Hooded Robins there - are they in the same area as
the kingfishers, or further towards Dunlop?

Regards
Frank
