Was at Stirling Range Retreat last week where
Regents are nesting. Reminded me of their close relatives, our locals, the
Superbs, though they seemed more vocal. Flying above present the same
stream-lined silhouette in flight past with a "karroak" call
prominent. Generally in swift flight (per the family) was allowed a wonderful
view of perching bird high up in a dead eucalypt branch. Beautiful.
Recommend SRR to birding travellers West,
everything from a rammed-earth residence (discretely hidden from the rest of the
plebs and vice versa...) to an aged caravan of genuine value. The 40 acres
provide some varied habitat and front the National Park as well as some further
private freehold bush at opposite ends. As I parked my rental car, saw Restless
Flycatcher, Willy Wagtail, Dusky Woodswallow, Yellow-plumed Honeyeater and the
usual suspects, not to mention Purple-Crowned Lorikeets and a Little Eagle
whirling above to create alarm calls below. The Sands (Tony and Ayleen) do a
very good job of making this a place worth visiting both fauna and flora-wise.
Be aware that it is one of the few places that anyone in the district can get
reasonable accomodation. I BBQ,d with an agricultural software sales rep who had
just discovered this place. Our conversation was about a particular bird, the
Fallen Eagle, Ben Cousins. Book ahead!

Shaun
