Following Richard Allen's report on the Weddin Mtns on 5/9 I decided to
head up for the day on Saturday, hoping to pick up a Black-eared Cuckoo,
which would be a lifer for me. Unfortunately I dipped on the cuckoo seen by
Richard at Holy Camp on the eastern side of the range.

After leaving Young behind I headed out to the Bribbaree Hills and it
wasn't long before I had come across 6 EMUS feeding by Bribbaree Ck, which
had water in it. By one dam near Thuddungra a flock of some 100
STRAW-NECKED IBIS had gathered. I then had to take a slight detour as the
old bridge at the small hamlet of Bimbi was closed. At Grimm's Lane, where
I have seen Crimson Chats in the past, I saw my first BLUE BONNET of the
day and an enormous Bearded Dragon.

I spent most of the morning on the western side of the range in Bimbi State
Forest and around Seaton's Farm and Ben Hall's Cave. There were plenty of
birds around including many RUFOUS SONGLARKS, RUFOUS WHISTLERS and
RED-CAPPED ROBINS in addition to DIAMOND FIRETAIL, SPECKLED WARBLER,
WHITE-WINGED TRILLER, BROWN TREECREEPER and JACKY WINTER. Nothing seemed in
flower with the only honeyeaters being a RED WATTLEBIRD, the resident
WHITE-PLUMED HONEYEATERS and several YELLOW-FACED HONEYEATERS.

Driving around the northern extent of the range along Back Piney Range Rd
is where I found some interesting birds reaching their eastern limits. A
lone YELLOW-EARED MINER, a pair of BLUE BONNETS and a BLUE-FACED HONEYEATER
drinking at a dam. There was a lot of bird activity by this dam including a
BROWN SONGLARK and RUFOUS SONGLARKS in the neighbouring fields.

APOSTLEBIRDS and GREY-CROWNED BABBLERS were common everywhere along the
roadside, but the only WHITE-BROWED BABBLERS of the day were near the
camping area at Ben Hall's Cave. A single OLIVE-BACKED ORIOLE was here
too.

Ont he way home I passed a LITTLE CORELLA among a flock of cockatoos in
Harden. Strangely I didn't see or hear a single Superb Parrot all day.
