Pelican ritual

I’m a newbie here, so please excuse if I’m describing the obvious!

Three days ago I witnessed four pelicans by Weston Park performing what appeared to be a strange ritual: after gathering branches and twigs and flying about with them, they began thrashing the water with their wings (still with a branch in beak) and performing various gyrations. I photographed their activities (several pics are on my website at www.raydrew.net/pelicans.htm )

It appears that the pelicans have gone now after a three day appearance. I’d be very grateful if anyone could let me know whether this was a kind of mating ritual, a nest building ritual, or otherwise?

Cheers

Ray Drew
