I went to Mulligans Flat yesterday, great
weather, I missed all the bad weather. Interesting birds included:
On Old coach Rd, just past the two main dams and near Woodland site 18, I saw a crested shrike tit, a large male. A pair of speckled warblers and scarlet robins. Common bronzewing. Buff rumped thornbill feeding nestlings and SC cockatoo in a hollow. Swamp wallaby. Dam 1 had two frog species, Dam 2 had one species. Corner of Old Coach Rd and South pathway (East end) pallid cuckoo male calling, and Horsfield's cuckoo calling (mobbed by thornbills), 2 grey currawongs. Another swamp wallaby. Near ‘black honeyeater dam’ a male and female pallid cuckoo, East of the Line of gum trees, 5 brown headed honeyeaters, Grey Butcherbird, 2 grey currawongs, 1 olive backed oriole, 1 black faced cuckoo shrike (overwintering??), female scarlet robin, lots of thornbills, grey shrike thrush. There is a large dam just North of here, with a dead standing stump- A hundred meters N were a pair of hooded robins. NW edge of the Line of trees, 2 yellow thornbills, speckled warblers, 2 white eared honeyeaters. A Fox. Lots of hares. NE of Line of trees was a fuscous honeyeater, another Horsfields bronze cuckoo, 1 tree martin. An echidna. Striated thornbills were common everywhere. I didnt see any grey fantails. On dusk I saw a bat, I think it was Geoffreys long eared bat (~10 degrees C) flying 3-10m, under the tree line, but in open areas, flying slowish, medium sized (for a bat), triangular wings/pointy jizz. 5 separate groups of kookaburras could be heard calling, on dusk. I was in the middle while 2 cuckoo individuals called for each species (does that make sense), so am sure numbers were at least what I have stated. Benj Whitworth
