We have just got back from a week (12-17 July) in tropical north
queensland. Since it was my first trip up north I managed some 40 lifers.
Highlights were coming across 5 Cassowaries on 4 separate occasions
including a heart-stopping close encounter and an adult with a chick. The
Daintree seems to be the place to see them. A cruise down the Daintree
River produced some magnificent Estuarine Crocodiles including a male over
3 metres long. We stayed at Kingfisher Park near Julatten for 2 nights and
went spotlighting there. The other 3 nights were spent at Cool Waters
Tourist Park in Cairns.
Highlight species included Papuan Frogmouth, Masked Owl, Spotted Catbird,
Victoria's Riflebird, Macleay's Honeyeater, Australian Bustard,
White-browed Robin, Grey-headed Robin, Large-billed Gerygone, Fernwren,
Pied Monarch, Yellow-breasted Boatbill, Metallic Starling, Double-eyed Fig
Parrot, Sarus Crane, Mareeba Rock Wallaby, 2 species of Bandicoot, Giant
White-tailed Rat, Long-tailed Pygmy Possum, Musky Rat Kangaroo, Striped
Possum, Spectacled Flying Fox, White-lipped Tree Frog, Brown Tree Frog,
Green Tree Snake, Saw-shelled Turtle anfd Ulysses Butterfly.
If anyone wants a short trip report I can send it to them.
Cheers
