Hi All,
Lia Battison, Maurits Zwankhuizen and David Rosalky (and I don't know about any others), saw
the White-fronted Honeyeater here
yesterday afternoon.
I heard it call only once (or twice)
today, from my bed at 7.30 am (and one possible call at about 10.00 am). This
morning (that I know of) Roger Curnow, Owen Holton, Bill Handke and Geoffrey
Dabb were here. Three of them saw the bird. It was not in view from about 8.30
till about 10.45. It is quite possible that during the two + hours that others
were unsuccessfully looking for it, it was actually in the close vicinity but
well hidden. When it was found again it stayed mostly in view for the next about
2 hours (not going away as it had the previous few days). However I have
inside things to do. Its behaviour today is very different from before. It
was not calling at all. When it finally reappeared, it spent most of the
time sitting very still, fluffed up and trying to sleep. It remained easy to
approach and gave the impression of being stressed after a hard cold and rainy
day and night before. Only as the sun came out a bit did it start to fly
around, then sit again. Several times it interrupted its rest to chase away an
Eastern Spinebill. Only briefly it came down to the Grevillea for active
feeding. Geoffrey has taken a lot of video of it, and I added to my
collection of video of it.
update: Having had some lunch and done other
things, I just paused my typing to go out and check again. Julienne Kamprad
& Frank Antram (who wanted some better photos) were there, as was the bird.
The bird was being active now and calling again, like yesterday.
The neighbours now mostly know why people are
hanging around. Creating some interest.
