This morning about 11 a Magpie carrying 2 thin sticks in
its bill flew across Athllon Drive near the intersection with Hindmarsh
Drive at Woden.
And for the past week and half in my local area at the
southern end of Gordon, the Magpies in 2 adjoining territories have started
displaying aggressive behaviour towards the trio of Grey Currawongs that have
been around for just over 3 weeks now. Today, the Magpies in one
territory were also being aggressive towards a Pied Currawong. And in that same
area a Magpie-Lark was also fluttering over and calling at the Magpies and
the Pied Currawong.
The Pied Currawongs have been aggressive towards the Grey
Currawongs, the Mapies, the Magpie-Larks, the Red Wattlebirds and anything else
avian that happens to catch their eye. I am not regarding this as breeding
behaviour though - it just seems normal year-round behaviour for Pied
Currawongs!!!
The Grey Currawongs, just out of interest, don't seem to have
any aggressive streak towards anything. They merely move out of the way when
either the Magpies or the Pied Currawongs fly at them - and then resume foraging
by picking through the fallen leaf and twig layer under the eucalypts
or tearing off chunks of bark on the lower trunks of those
eucalypts.
