Tobias wonders what is the matter with magpies. Well they are aggressive and territorial creatures. I'm sure that the family politics is well-known to experts, they are well studied birds. Typically what you will be seeing and describing is parents fighting their now independent children to push them out of the territory. Adults will also have territorial battles. These sometimes come down to the ground and fight but usually adult territorial battles are waged in flight. Easily observed because of the characteristic calls involved.
