My Wednesday started with a visit to Cuumbeun (I think that is spelt correctly) Nature Reserve with my bicycle. This started on Wanna Wanna Rd and finished at Lonergan Road in Queanbeyan. If anyone is contemplating replicating this in a vehicle note that the gate at Lonrgan Road is locked and I really don't think you'd want to take anything less than a very expendable (and powerful) 4WD up the cliff from the Queanbeyan River. I walked down that bit.
The birds of particular interest along here were vocalising superb lyrebirds in some of the gullies beside the road. I didn't go off to ty to find them.
Passing by Newline Quarry I was most impressed by the amount of metal used in the new fence and gate. I was also impressed by the number of crested shrike tits (at least 6 and possibly more) and brown treecreepers (at least 4 and possibly 6) in the vicinity of the dam. A pair of red-rumped parrots and a pair of crimson rosellas seemed tbe contemplating inspecting some hollows. In human terms they were reading the Real Estate adverts but not actually visiting the properties.
After lunch I went to revisit the Hughes bower birds to try to get a photograph or two. The bower is situated in some weedy scrub and I couldn't get a clear shot at it. After 45 minutes I decided that my presence was probably upsetting the birds (the male was giving me VERY stern looks) so I left. The attached is the best photo I achieved.
