When I began to survey my current GBS site in
Hughes almost six years ago, I only saw Noisy Miners regularly in the open areas
bordering the Federal Golf Course. Maybe once or twice a year I would record two
or three Noisy Miners in my GBS site in Goble Street Hughes. This has changed in
the past 12 months. I am now recording flocks of 5 to 8 birds almost every
week.
Interestingly, this increase in Noisy Miners has
coincided with a decrease in the number of Common Mynas recorded. In the past I
would regularly see a maximum of 14 to 18 Common Mynas in my GBS site each week.
Now I am seeing only two. I wonder if there could be a connection?
I have Red Wattlebirds that breed regularly in my
garden. The N. Miners and the R. Wattlebirds seem to take it in turns to use the
bird bath, but I have not seen the Wattlebirds chasing the Miners
away.
