Greetings all: I would encourage people to submit any records of the Diamond Firetail to COG - please give location details on the sheets, and if there are immature/young birds it would be helpful to note this.  Its one of the species of concern in our woodland surveys - its almost totally absent from the large grassy woodland reserves (eg Mulligans/Gooroo), indeed we do have enough records in the woodland project sites to enable statistical trends to be determined.  As observed below by Julian, there appear to be birds around on the western side of urban Canberra and in some of the rural lands, especially those burnt in the 2003 bushfires.   I think the species is likely to be affected by extended periods of drought (few seeding grasses), and possibly overgrazing (kangaroos) in the big reserves.
cheers
Jenny
