On one of my regular perambulations around The Pinnacle
Nature Reserve, in Hawker, this morning, I was surprised to see a pair of Speckled
Warblers nest-building. For about 10 minutes I watched them gathering beakfuls
of short dry grass then flying about 20 metres away, to poke it into the
beginnings of a nest at the base of a thistle. From the rudimentary state of
the nest, it appeared they had only just started building, probably earlier
this morning. HANZAB notes that SWs have been recorded as breeding in all
months except May. Perhaps this pair know something about global warming …
