Sorry John,
I think a Red-rumped Thornbill would be a new
species, but I assume you just used the wrong word. So it is unclear which you
mean. There certainly are Australian spiders that prey on small birds, but they
do not occur in southern Australia (as far as I know). However birds can get
caught in spider's webs and just being caught can lead to their
demise.
