I was lucky enough to find a female Barking Owl at Campbell park
yesterday evening near the horse gate. Actually, I rather think that
it found me.
At dusk I was drawn by curiosity to a yappy dog sound that appeared
to be somewhere in the woodland but could not fix on the direction
from which it originated. After suffering 3 people on motorbikes in
addition to the normal atrocities I was less than pleased by what
appeared to be somebody wandering around with a noisy pooch. The
noise seemed to be following me as I headed slowly back to the car
park. I was stopped in my tracks by he unmistakable sound of talons
on wood and I looked up into the glaring eyes of a Barking Owl
Shortly thereafter the owl departed swinging around and heading north
back towards the general area of the original yappy dog noises.
I heard a sneezy sound in the Campbell Offices car park so I
approached quietly and made irresistible little squeaky noises. A
Boobook flew straight at me and landed right under one of the bright
lights. As I looked at it comparing it with the Barking Owl I
realised that the fuzzy streak behind it was in fact comet McNaught.
The Boobook was still perched in the same spot 10 minutes later when
I left.
