Although not sufficiently disorganized for my taste, the closing stages of the inaugural national pictorial bird miniquiz, were pleasantly confused.  During this, some might have missed the answers to ‘who painted this magpie’, a segment at which the distinguished litterateur, Suzanne Edgar, and the knockabout but equally knowledgeable Noel Luff, did particularly well.

         Albert Tucker  1914-1999

Sydney Long  1871-1955 (born and educated at Goulburn and better known for ‘Spirit of the Plains’, the brolga painting)

The first fleet artist labeled ‘The Port Jackson Painter’ (drawing on which the original scientific description of the AM was based)

         Sidney Nolan  1917-1992

         John Gould and Henry Richter

Clifton Pugh  1924-1990 (this one was on display at a recent exhibition at National Portrait Gallery)
