Further to John's email about Superbs not being seen at Holt since 21
November, my experience in Gungahlin has been that Superb Parrot numbers
flying over my place have dropped considerably since 21 November with no
sightings from evenings, just mornings. My last record was this morning:
21/11 7pm - 11 birds - heading north
23/11 8.30am - 3 birds - heading south
24/11 7.50am - 1+ birds (heard) - direction unknown
25/11 7am - 1+ birds (heard) - direction unknown
25/11 8am - 4 birds - heading north
29/11 7am - 1+ birds (heard) - direction unknown
There is a gap between 25/11 and 29/11 since I was interstate on those
days. I wonder if the birds are settling down to breed in the local
woodland reserves.
Cheers
Marnix

[canberrabirds] Superb Parrots
not at Holt Oval

I go past Holt Oval once or twice most days but have not seen Superb
Parrots there since 21 November. Nonetheless, I'm impressed with the
ever-burgeoning flock of Crested Pigeons.
At 7 pm yesterday, I stopped by and did a few counts of the Crested Pigeons
which varied between thirty-two and thirty-eight. Trouble was, the
prurient, pileated piges would not stay put. There was much scuttling
hither and thither together with chest-puffing and tale-fanning. Perhaps
they were doing a bit of courting preparatory to forthcoming rain, then
start nest-building. Maybe the piges have arcane ways of proving El Nino
doomsayers wrong. I hope so.
