Jack, it might be worth checking the area between the Kingston Foreshore
development and the boat harbour. While paddling close to the bank there on
Friday I flushed a bird which ascended vertically and then headed off in the
general direction of the wetlands while calling. I'm sure it was "lark
like" but can't be more helpful than that.
Other interesting sights/sounds in the Jerrabombera Wetlands/LBG since
Thursday have included 8 Royal Spoonbills in breeding plumage, maybe 100
Aust White Ibis (nice change to see them away from the tip), a white & grey
goose that takes turns at hanging out alternately with the Black Swans, then
the Pelicans; Nankeen Night Heron count up to 5 incl. one juvenile; 2 Great
Egrets; 15 smaller Egrets presumably Cattle Egrets flying; a Black Swan on
nest at edge of Jerra Ck back channel while a Little Grassbird heard calling
nearby.
On Molonglo reach perhaps 4 Sacred Kingfishers (only one sighted), plus
several young Darters in various stages of development. Also witnessed a
Darter's exceptional spearfishing ability when one dived and surfaced with a
small fish impailed on its beak. Some juggling ensued then down the hatch
went dinner!
At the western end of the lake another Little Grassbird was also heard in
the reeds on the banks of the GGs residence, while Seagulls are nesting on
the wooden paddle wheeler in Orana Bay and on 3 boats in Yarralumla Bay.
