I spent the morning and a couple of hours in the evening blitzing around Mt
Majura. I was grateful for the advice of Anthony Overs, who did the Mt
Majura grid for the last few years and the recent chatline postings. Both
gave me a good idea of what to look out for and where to look. The day was
cold and the wind was up by 10am. I had to work hard for the 63 species I
found.
The highlights for me were a pair of Leaden Flycatchers, 2 Shining
Bronze-Cuckoos, 3 Fan-tailed Cuckoos and a Wedge-tailed Eagle on the eastern
side of the mountain. On the western side I particularly enjoyed see a
Sacred Kingfisher, a Collared Sparrowhawk, a pair of Gang-gangs, a
Mistletoebird and a Speckled Warbler.
Interestingly I heard only two Spotted Pardalotes calling during the whole
day despite constantly hearing Striated Pardalotes calling.
Even though I looked hard I was unable to see the Little Eagle, Flame
Robins, Dusky Woodsallows or the Painted Button Quails that have been
reported on the chatline.
Cheers
Julienne K
ps. Despite the cold day I saw lots of people constructively using the Mt
Majura area. It was very heartening given the recent destruction of a
community tree planting effort.
