Julienne is far from a beginner, but her question below is an opportunity to comply with Julian’s exhortation and provide some background for newcomers to this list.  The first point is how you find out things.  The 2 most useful sources for such questions on local birds are probably the 1992 COG Atlas (still) and Philip Veerman’s self-published summary of the GBS data.  Anyone who wants an overview of the local birdlife should have access to both those volumes.

Geoff,
I'm curious to note that you don't mention the COG-published "Birds of Canberra Gardens". Should I throw my copy out in scornful disdain, or does it perhaps have some minimal value? (As a long-time birdo only just coming to grips with Canberra's birdlife, I confess to having found it very useful.) And would  it be asking too much to wonder where the 2 sources you mention can be obtained?

Let me also take this opportunity second Julian's call for more replies to go to the list instead of privately to the poster. Like Julian, I find this tendency on the COG chat line mystifying, and I wonder whether it's simply a consequence of the way the list is set up (i.e.so that hitting "Reply" sends a message to the poster, not to the list). I have not encountered this on other lists I subscribe to and wonder if it cannot be changed, so that replies go to the list by default...
