Other Springy things

Other spring like things indeed... I have included the following pics because as birders I would assume we all have a healthy respect and admiration for the snakes we encounter in the bush. I was lucky enough to spot the following 'lifer' on Larry's Mountain Road just west of Moruya and it obliged by staying long enough to allow a few pictures at a safe distance. I have never seen the magnificent Death Adder in the wild before and apparently this example is a big one. The average length for Death Adders is approx 40cm (Cogger) though this plump individual was in excess of 50cm at a conservative estimate...

A most interesting feature of this snake is its bright orange tail tip which would approximate a catepillar or grub in the leaf litter and is used to entice potential prey within striking range...

I hope this posting lifts the spirits of some, who like me, have been saddened today at the bizarre passing of Steve Irwin........God knows what he would have done with the poor Death Adder!

Nature never fails to surprise.............

Also the first spring orchids (Blue and Pink 'Fingers') on Black Mtn, and at Mullies this morning, Early Nancies and an Echidna mating train (part of it attached). If you're not familiar with the phenomenon, I'm sure Geoffrey could give a more interesting explanation than I could!

cheers and bliss

Ian
