John,
This was a standard piece of bird observer
accessories since at least in the 1970s (which is when I started) at least among
the members of the Bird Observers Club. I have owned several over the
years. I always used to have one tied to my binocular strap. Must admit I let it
lapse about 10 years ago. Mainly because it needs to be topped up with the
powder (rosin I think it's called) otherwise it stops working. I think it much
more effective in attracting little birds that vocally attempting to make
squeaky noise, which gets really hard beyond ten seconds. Then there is the
efficacy of bothering the birds so much, just so us lot can get a better view of
them. Maybe I should get mine out and recharge it and have another go.
