Hello Ian,
Yes, you are right of course. I am always cautious about anecdotal
evidence. The periodic droughts certainly have an impact on bird populations
in the area. However, I went there with my dad, who grew up in the area and
has been a regular visitor there since he left the place in 1933. He also
commented on the paucity of the bird life from his previous visits there
over the last 8 or is 9 decades.
Carmen.

Hi Carmen. I haven't been to the Rock for a year or so, and I agree that
it's always been pretty good for birds. I'm guessing that the Riverina's
still in drought, which would partly explain a paucity - one important
adaptation to El Nino is nomadism. The other thing worth considering is
simply the chance element of birding - some days I can go to Campbell Park
or the NBG and see very little, next day it's bursting. In reality of
course the birds are there, just not where I happen to be. I'd be wary of
drawing too definite a conclusion from just one visit.
cheers
Ian
