I've become quite used to
seeing Brown Quail in the grasslands around Lake Ginninderra, but
yesterday I came across a small group (family?) of 7 taking refuge in a
leaf-strewn flowerbed in the small paved area beside Emu Bank Rd. The
flowerbed in question is literally just a stone's throw from Belconnen
Mall, only meters from a busy road and several hundred meters from the
closest long grass. That said, the heavy layer of fallen leaves did
provide excellent camouflage for the quail (except for the loud
rustling noises whenever they moved), and I suppose it would make an
effective blanket against the cold overnight. Does anyone know of any
similar behaviour by Brown Quail elsewhere?
