Mmm, it hadn't occurred to me that they might be refugees. I was thinking they might be the same birds I've been seeing recently in the long grass near the new apartment blocks on the western shore, but I have no clues as to why they would move...

And it is not as if all the Brown Quail have deserted Lake Ginninderra – I flushed one on the Peninsula on Thursday. Maybe your group has been displaced from the construction site on the eastern shore? b

I've become quite used to seeing Brown Quail in the grasslands around Lake Ginninderra, but yesterday I came across a small group (family?) of 7 taking refuge in a leaf-strewn flowerbed in the small paved area beside Emu Bank Rd. The flowerbed in question is literally just a stone's throw from Belconnen Mall, only meters from a busy road and several hundred meters from the closest long grass. That said, the heavy layer of fallen leaves did provide excellent camouflage for the quail (except for the loud rustling noises whenever they moved), and I suppose it would make an effective blanket against the cold overnight. Does anyone know of any similar behaviour by Brown Quail elsewhere?
