Hi Paul
There has been a small flock of Diamond Firetails in that area over
the last few weeks - one of at least two in the area. Have not seen
them associating with swallows before and for that matter have not
seen more than a few swallows in the area for a month or more - I
must try walking in the afternoon rather than the morning some
day! Incidentally, the next paddock on the left where the trail
turns a sharp bend before the stretch where you saw the firetails
always has pipits in it - there is something there that they like and
you put them up all the time when you walk through (warily avoiding
the two large bulls among the cattle in there!).
Incidentally, the pond you have indicated is actually Fassifern
Pond. Jarramlee Pond is the next one south - closer to Macgregor.

Hello everyone.
I was cycling this afternoon about 4.30 along the National
Equestrian trail north of the Belconnen Pony Club towards
Dunlop. Counted 13 Richard's Pipits along the track and about 0.5
km south of Dunlop came across about 20 Welcome Swallows perched on
the power line. Some of the Welcome Swallows appeared to have very
red rumps. But as well as mingling with the Swallows there were
about 15 Diamond Firetails perched along the fence. After a bit of
an observational break (no nocs though) I proceeded slowly and some
of the little chaps kept ahead of me, leapfrogging down the fence
for quite a way. The most constant companion kept this up for about
300 metres. There was also a bunch (about 10) Red-rumped Parrots,
plus the mandatory flock of Starlings in that area.
The precise spot was 35 12 00 South and 149 00 19 East.
