I like Chris & Anthony's ideas on the subject.
I suggest an important part of the question is whether the birds are also in
higher numbers in their usual haunts around Boorowa, Young, Cootamundra, Harden,
etc area up to Cowra, Grenfell. It could be that they are having a good season
overall and we are now getting an overflow, with them spreading in greater
number towards Canberra or it could be that they are having a bad season overall
and moving towards Canberra or staying here in greater numbers because
things are bad elsewhere. Has anyone of us been out west a bit and have anything
to report? I haven't, this summer.
I can't imagine any direct connection to
grasshoppers (apart from a parallel, rather than a causative
response).
