A Black Falcon flew over
Campbell
Park yesterday at 6pm. It
was being harassed by noisy friarbirds and magpies, it flew originally from
North to South, then headed East, flying almost over me. Features I
noticed at the time were, dark ashy
brown/grey brown (rather than chocolate), Tail long, slightly wider near tip
than at base, tail tip almost straight, but slightly rounded outwards. Long
wings, bent in middle, not wide. I saw the underneath, the wings had a pale/buff
line down the middle/centre. Chin was pale buff. Otherwise no other striations
or bands just dark ashy brown. Very slow
wing beats, loping along, occassional sideways to
get rid of harassers. Wings were held quite high but probably to keep it
above the tree tops, of which it was
close. Didn’t notice notched tail and beak and eyes were not
seen.
Other birds seen were 2 soaring
little eagles- 1 dark phase, 1 light. A white throated gerygone feeding young in
a nest only 1.5m off ground- The bird flew right by me. Dollarbird. Dusky
woodswallows with 2 juveniles. White winged triller male, female and
juvenile. Leaden flycatcher. Western gerygone and sacred kingfisher
heard. No
bronzewings.
