In past years Koels have turned up around this area at about
the same times they have been reported in other suburbs. This year it
(maybe just one) came later, only about 10 days ago, but has been around
intermittently since then.
This morning one called from Rocky Knob at 0700 for about
20 mins before flying off southwards in the direction of lower
Narrabundah.
The local bird has been code-named Vernon for
identification purposes. The calling bird is
notoriously difficult to locate because the sound seems to come from
different directions according to the way the bird's head is pointing. I
have noticed this with other birds that have repetitive, resonant
calls: Spotted Pardalote, Crested Bellbird, Crimson Rosella,
Painted Honeyeater, Brown Goshawk. When the last 2 are calling rapidly and
swivelling their heads, the varying sound gives the impression that the bird is
moving, when it is in fact stationary. Similarly, a stationary Koel
calling over several miutes can give the impression that it is in different
places, or is more than one bird.
