Anyone else disappointed with the Canberra Times
liftout, 'Canberra's amazing gardens'? I had been anticipating the worst given
the promos of the front cover etc, and it met my expectations. There are some
great gardens - BUT . . . .
* The only mention of birds that I found was a p. 3
caption of a pic of garden with roses and other exotics dominating and what
might be a wattle bird at a birdbath, referring to a transformation to a 'lush,
colourful haven for birds'. In the text the 'haven for birds' was repeated, but
no sign in pics or text of anything particularly bird-friendly other than the
birdbath and plenty of foliage (exotic other than treeferns) - and a quirky
metal sculpture of a cockie.. There is a lovely large native garden featured
(last), but there was no mention of nectar plants, and only one (?) that I
could see in the pics and as it was covered in flowers it
is probably without flowers the rest of the year.
* generally the gardens looked like they
required STACKS of money to design and build and to
maintain (exceptions were hobbyists of various good sorts and
gardens designed by Credric Bryant, and a couple of others).
* the first 'Quick tip' was about training that
terrible weed, ivy !! (at least keep the blackbirds and currawongs
happy)
What can we do to get the Canberra Times to take
the need for bird-friendly gardens seriously??
cheers
Barbara
