Sorry if this is trivial. The Aust. Ravens nesting
near my home appear to have young in nest. Today however I found the parent with
some white feathers in its right wing (that I have written about
before), dead under a connection power pole. A few maggots in it already.
The partner was flying around calling a lot. On Friday or Saturday the pair were
together, chasing off another Raven pair that were passing through. I don't know
the cause of death, could be electrocution, given the location found.
It could be starvation, they didn't appear to find much food, as in I never
saw them with food. In the last few weeks, I have also found two dead adult Pied
Currawongs and a dead Magpie nearby. The Currawongs in particular seem to be
having a hard time finding enough to eat, they spend a lot of time looking for
things among curls of eucalypt bark on the ground and in trees, with only one
nest with young in my area, although at least two Magpie-lark nests are doing
well with nestlings, and several dy Red Wattlebirds are around. Strangely the
two Magpie-lark's nests are within about 20 metres of the Raven's nest and
Currawong's nest.
On another aside, the one White-winged Chough that
inhabited the local park in my area lived by itself for five weeks August to
September and not since. Hopefully it found its way back to the group (on Mt
Taylor?) but I don't know.
