Sounds
like a strange place for a Painted Buttonquail?
I've
seen them in grassland before but never far from sclerophyll
forest.
I was
out there carp bashing last week and didn't see the Monkey Ducks that Marnix
reported but there was at least one pair of Chestnut Teal and a Royal Spoonbill
in breeding plumage. Also White winged Trillers in the willows.
Thousands of carp in the shallow channels - I wonder if they displace the
waterfowl, not just by competition, but also by their presence as there's never
as many ducks as I would expect.
regards, Alex.
After being woken very early by my
daughter this morning I decided to head out to Kellys Swamp and FSP where I was able to watch
the sunrise. Not much to report at Kellys, with diversity and abundance down,
but I was overflown by a Whiskered Tern. On my way back up the road to the
sewerage ponds I saw a small ball of feather on the side of the road which on
closer inspection turned out to be a male Painted Button quail. It walked slowly
and ‘drunkenly’ (there had been relatively recent thread about his behaviour on
Birding-aus) across the road allowing me excellent views. At
least 7 Whiskered Terns ponds 1, 2 and 3.
Cheers
Alastair
