G'day Geoffrey and all,
A quick reply to at least one of these questions - I think it has been
made illegal to deliberatly feed Cassowaries on the grounds that it
makes the birds too reliant on the free food, puts them more in danger
from cars, dogs, idiots with bows and arrows (don't laugh, two of the
last ones we received from Mission Beach to the ANWC had arrow heads in
them) and the males are more likely to do somone damage if they have
chicks in built up areas. If these gents want to photograph Cassowaries
I suggest the Licuala Forest Walk just south of Mission Beach, or the
walk in Tam O'Shanter State Forest, also near Mission Beach.
Alternatively one of the guest houses/national parks on the Atherton
Tableland - can't remember which one - has cassowaries that come in
regularly (for a free feed!!!??)
I can't comment on the sites in southern Queensland as it is so long
since I have been there.
Mark
