You probably already knew about this, but I didn't. It's just been announced
that Envt ACT has received an $807,000 grant from the Australian Research
Council for research into the recovery of threatened species in ACT
woodlands. Wildlife Research and Monitoring will be working with David
Lindenmayer and others from ANU CRES. Inter alia, over 5 years it will help
with research into recovery of threatened woodland plants and animals,
particularly birds and small mammals. Also looking at the effects of
replacing fallen timber, fox control, use of fire to manage fuel hazards and
the management of grazing by stock and kangaroos. [I shall try to keep an
open mind on the qn of cattle grazing in reserves for mngt - I do trust the
people involved.] The focus will be on Mullies and Goorooyarroo.
Potentially very exciting news, I think - as long as govt doesn't meantime
decide the reserves would be more use as a freeway route...
