On the subject of Straiated Pardalotes and breeding, they are in great abundance around Philip College and, 400m sw, the Penrhyn Buildings, in Woden. This is because of the abundance of nesting holes in the hollow of the structure under the road bridge on Launceston Street, and in the roof insulation of the car-park of Penrhyn Buildings (this floor is open and also allows many startlings and mynahs in the nest in the ceiling), respectively. From  mid-winter onwards they and their calls are very noticeable in these two areas, and the calling is continuous for weeks on end.

A couple of weeks ago there was an outbreak of calling by the SPs around these two areas, and, whilst parking my bike, I saw one SP emerging from a hole in the ceiling of the Penrhyn car-park with a feather in its beak (cleaning out).

I too can't believe they nest this early (I suspect they start around July), but I guess that during their non-breeding period pairs either periodically assert their ownership of a hole, and their calling sets off others in the area to assert their ownership (sounds a bit like a NSW State Election, doesn' t it?), or a youngster starts proclaiming ownership of a new hole and this sets others off.

Crested shrike tit

not nesting time?
Brown headed honeyeater
Double barred finch
(Not the complete list)

But no thornbills were seen.  Also, good, no starlings or Indian mynas
